A severe water scarcity has hit the downtown area of Maitama District in the Federal Capital City over the last two weeks, Abuja Metro reports.
Many parts of the affluent neighbourhood have been struggling with lack of pipe-borne water as the Federal Capital Territory Water Board supply has been off.
The worst-affected areas include residential spots on Yedseram Street, Gana Street, and the entire Maitama Federal Housing Authority in the district.

According to sources, the residences of the Ambassadors of China, Pakistan, Egypt, Indonesia, South Africa, and others were also affected.
Reports also indicate that no fewer than 10 embassies within the affected area have also been grappling with this scarcity.
One of the affected residents, Alhaji Yahaya Ibrahim, described the inconsistent public water supply as disastrous and very uncomfortable.
He attributed the problem to numerous broken water pipes and poor supply from the Usma Dam source. However, some residents also linked the issue to the ongoing construction of an overhead bridge at the Nicon Junction leading into the Maitama District.
He said, “We have resorted to buying water, which is costly and a health hazard. I reported to the FCT Water Board headquarters at Area 3 last week.”
He added that most housing in the area heavily relies on self-serving boreholes.
“For those of us who don’t have boreholes, we have to buy water regularly. The FCT minister should do the needful. Last week, I visited the Water Board HQ at Area 3 to complain. I took along my paid receipts to convince the Head of Distribution, but it was all in vain.”
Despite being one of the highbrow areas in Abuja, Maitama has grappled with interrupted water supply for a long time as most residents rely on boreholes for domestic water.
A source told Abuja Metro that over the weekend, one of the ambassadors in the affected areas had to rely on a nearby mosque to fetch water for domestic use.
Abuja Metro also reliably gathered that the mosque has its own borehole serving its water needs.
When contacted on phone yesterday, the Acting General Manager of the FCT Water Board, Daniel Salka Audu, said he was not aware of the situation at Maitama and promised to deplore a technical team to the area immediately.
He said, ‘’Thank you for this, I will send my team there immediately to find out what happened and restore supply.’’
