Brazil has fined social media platform X $1.42 million for failing to comply with court orders on misinformation and user data disclosure.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes has ordered the social media platform X, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, to pay a fine of 8.1 million reais ($1.42 million) for failing to comply with judicial directives, according to a ruling made public on Thursday.
The penalty stems from a legal case last year in which the court mandated X to remove a profile accused of spreading misinformation and to provide the user’s registration data. X’s failure to comply resulted in a daily fine of 100,000 reais and exposed its local legal representative to potential criminal liability.
Justice Moraes’ ruling highlighted X’s continued noncompliance with the order to disclose the user’s data and demanded immediate payment of the accumulated fine.
Legal representatives for X in Brazil have declined to comment on the matter.
In 2024, the platform faced further scrutiny in Brazil when it was temporarily suspended for over a month. This action was taken due to X’s failure to adhere to court orders concerning hate speech moderation and its noncompliance with the legal requirement to appoint a local representative in the country.
The ruling underscores Brazil’s strict stance on regulating digital platforms and ensuring compliance with national laws, particularly concerning misinformation and content moderation.
