Blackout delays senate plenary at N/Assembly

Senators yesterday failed to commence plenary on time due to a blackout that struck the National Assembly in Abuja.

Some of the senators who went into the red chamber to commence the business of the day were sighted sitting in darkness and looking frustrated.

Our correspondent gathered that the development stopped some senators from attending plenary yesterday when they got wind of the blackout.

A top source told Daily Trust that the Senate President Godswill Akpabio who was warming up to preside over the plenary stayed back until power was later restored.

He said, “The Senate president was compelled to stay back when he was informed of darkness at the chamber.”

Our correspondent reports that the senators later held their plenary briefly and adjourned sitting till Wednesday.

During plenary, the senators passed for a second reading, a bill to amend the National Assembly Library Trust Fund Act. This followed the presentation of the lead debate by the Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele (APC Ekiti Central) who is the sponsor of the bill.

Daily Trust reports that the bill titled, “A Bill to Amend the National Assembly Library Trust Fund Amendment Act No 11 of 2022” seeks to change the name—National Assembly Library Trust Fund to National Assembly Library Resource Centre.

It also seeks to “eliminate the ambiguity in the chairmanship position of the governing council, streamline the functions of the governing council and the office of the director general.”
