Bello, El-Rufai’s troubles bad for Yoruba, North relationship, Showumi tells Tinubu

A chieftain of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Showumi, has warned President Bola Tinubu that the troubles that befell former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai and his Kogi counterpart, Yahaya Bello, could worsen mistrust between the South West and the Northern region.

Showumi, in a statement, said that in light of various controversies involving notable political figures in the APC since President Bola Tinubu assumed office, the president’s perceived disregard for the consequences of not honouring his agreement with partners who helped him into power could be fatal in the political relationship between the two regions.

He said, “Nasir El-Rufai, despite any criticism, fully supported Asiwaju during the primaries and general elections. How has he been treated? El-Rufai now faces a security report that humiliated him during a Senate clearance dominated by Tinubu loyalists! What else can this be called but betrayal?

“The same Yahaya Bello who oversaw the APC membership registration. Is this the same GYB who is now embarrassed to the extent we are witnessing? If this is not betrayal, I would like someone to tell me what is.”

He added, “How can you allow PDP members to roam free while those who worked tirelessly to secure power for you are left running helter-skelter?”

The PDP chieftain lamented that the repercussions of the president’s actions will extend beyond party lines and could worsen the mistrust between the North and the Southwest.
