The management of AYM Shafa Holdings Limited has condoled with the families affected by the tragic stampede during the distribution of Zakat in Bauchi on Sunday.

Daily Trust reported the death of 15 people from family sources, but the police said seven people died in the stampede.

Dr Ibrahim Adamu Disina, a Bauchi-based Islamic scholar, who led a delegation from AYM Shafa, offered prayers for the souls of the deceased.

Disina said Alhaji Yakubu Mohammed (AYM) Shafa was out of the country, but that they felt it was important to extend their condolences before his return.

He explained that the zakat distribution was carried out by the Abdulmumini Foundation on behalf of AYM Shafa.

During their visit, the delegation provided each bereaved family with two bags of rice, one bag of millet, maize and N250,000.

Usman Abdulmumini, whose 13-year-old daughter, Aisha, lost her life in the stampede, suggested that AYM considered transferring zakat funds via banks instead of distributing cash directly to beneficiaries.

Suleiman Adamu Duguri, who also lost a daughter, Maryam, in the incident, said their family had plans for Maryam’s marriage two weeks after the upcoming Eid el-Fitr.

In response to the tragedy, the Abdulmumini Foundation, in a statement yesterday, said it had launched an investigation into the circumstances of the stampede to identify the cause and implement immediate corrective actions to prevent a recurrence.
