Armed bandits reportedly attempted to raid the home of the chairman of Bakori Local Government Area in Katsina State late Sunday evening.
The assailants targeted the residence around 11:15 p.m. in the Sanyi area of Bakori town, but their efforts were unsuccessful due to swift intervention by security forces and local vigilantes.
An eyewitness, Muhammad Idris, shared with Daily Post that the bandits, heavily armed, tried to breach the chairman’s home but were repelled. They then turned their attention to the house of one Tukur Abdullahi, yet security teams quickly responded, causing the criminals to flee.
“They arrived with guns and attempted to enter the chairman’s house, but by God’s grace, they failed. They then tried to enter the residence of one Tukur Abdullahi, but security forces quickly responded, forcing the bandits to flee,” he explained.
“The security personnel did their best, but the sound of gunfire from the vigilantes helped scare them away since they were using sophisticated weapons,” he added.
This marks the first time such an attack has occurred in the heart of Bakori town, with previous raids typically focused on outlying villages. Despite the attackers using advanced weaponry, the combined efforts of security personnel and vigilantes drove them off.
However, the bandits did manage to kidnap Auwalu, a cattle trader, and his wife from the Nasarawa neighborhood, located on the town’s outskirts. This is the first time the criminals have targeted the central area, as they have generally focused on more rural communities.
“They abducted Auwalu and his wife because their neighborhood is on the outskirts of the town. This is the first time these criminals have entered the town itself; they usually target villages and communities on the outskirts,” Muhammad said.
Attempts to contact the Katsina State Police spokesperson, ASP Sadiq Aliyu, for further comment went unanswered. Banditry continues to be a significant issue in Katsina, with rural areas often bearing the brunt of such violent crimes.
