The Senator representing Abia Central Senatorial district, Distinguished Senator Austin Akobundu, has tasked Nigerians to celebrate the living especially those that have made monumental progress while alive, pointing out people whose contributions have impacted positively to humanity should be commemorated while alive.
Speaking during the 80th birthday celebration of an elder statesmen, astute politician and proponent of increased cassava revolution in Nigeria, D Emelike Godwill Okoro on in Umuahia, Senator Akobundu observed that the celebrant, as an agriculturalist and fearless fighter, has advanced the course of agriculture and contributed immensely to the production of more farm yields particularly cassava in the country.
He described Dr Eme Okoro as a dogged fighter, erudite scholar, a consummate administrator, a man that believes in justice for all, committed family man and a democrat, pointing out that beyond the facade of perceived social and political insurgency lies a unassuming and humble man with the milk of human kindness.
Distinguished Senator Akobundu commended Dr Okoro’s wife, Joy for ensuring that her husband achieved a lot in his eight decades on earth and remained healthy at that age and prayed that God, in His infinite mercy, should continue to bless, provide and lead the celebrant, his wife and five children in good health and in all their endeavours.
In his comment at the event, the Chairman of the Board of Trustee (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a former Senate President and President of the National Assembly, Distinguished Senator Adolphus Wabara, lauded the Abia State governor, Alex Otti, for his good works in the state.
According to him, he (Senator Wabara) was a citizen of Abia State before becoming a member of PDP and declared “before becoming a PDP card-carrying member, before becoming an NRC card-carrying member in this state, I, Adolphus Nduneweh Wabara, was first and foremost a citizen of Abia.
“Politics ends after campaigns, after elections and then you start thinking of governance. Even a blind man can see what is happening in Abia! And, I am saying it again! Maybe now since they said I was suspended, they can now expel me.
“But, having said so, sir, continue with the works; our ancestors in Abia are with you”, Senator Wabara declared.
Speaking, Abia State governor, Alex Otti, congratulated Okoro on his 80th birthday, saying jokingly that Okoro has turned “80 years younger.”
He restated that his administration does not segregate, adding that his stance that so long as one lives in Abia and do things expected of a citizen, that individual is an Abian., even he as described Abians as people of excellence.
In his speech at the birthday ceremony organized by friends and well wishers of Dr Eme Okoro at the International Conference Centre, Ogurube layout and attended by the crème de la crème of the Nigerian society, another elder statesman and pioneer chairman of Niger Delta Development Commission (NNDC), Chief Onyema Ugochukwu eulogized Dr Okoro, describing him as a sage; a man of the people whose word is his bond.
Chief Ugochukwu lauded the wife of the octogenarian for ensuring that the Okoro’s family remains peaceful and homely and noted that it was because of the convivial atmosphere Dr Okoro was able to conquer in many fronts.
Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, representing Abia South Senatorial district, who also spoke at the event, observed that Dr Eme Okoro’s life was full of positive impacts to humanity and expressed the feeling that his humility would continue to make him look younger and thereof healthier every year.
The celebrant and Ozuitem-Bende born agriculturist and politician, in his speech thanked God for him giving him good health and for providing him with supportive family, pledging in the process to continue to work for Nde Bende, Abia State, Nigeria and humanity as a whole.
