3 days ago 29

At least one person was confirmed d3ad, and four others sustained injuries after a school building collapsed at the Government Girls Technical College (GGTC) in Potiskum, Yobe state.

The four injured students have been rescued and are currently receiving treatment in hospitals, Blueprint reports.

Blueprint gathered that the incident occurred during class hours around 12noon on Thursday when a corridor attached to a block of two classrooms for senior students (SS2) collapsed.

The two classrooms, each accommodating approximately 25 students, contained about 50 students in total.

Briefing Blueprint correspondent on the development, the Permanent Secretary of the state ministry of basic and secondary education in Yobe state, Bukar Aji Bukar, said, “Actually, there was an incident this morning at Government Girls Senior Technical School, Potiskum. We were informed just a few minutes before 1pm.”

He stated that at the time, the Commissioner was on his way to Nguru and was scheduled to proceed to Abuja for an official engagement.

“Immediately, I contacted him to inform him of what had happened. We promptly moved to the affected area to assess the situation first hand.

“Unfortunately, five students were affected. Tragically, one of them passed away—may their soul rest in perfect peace. The other four students are in stable condition, according to the medical doctor.

“We visited them in the hospital, and while they were traumatised, we hope they will be discharged by tomorrow, God willing,” he said.

“We have already engaged our team and invited the Minister of Housing to investigate the cause of the incident. We are committed to ensuring such an event does not happen again, God willing.

“As you know, under the government of Honourable Mai Mala Buni, there have been ongoing construction and reconstruction projects. However, the affected classroom block was not part of these repairs. Inshallah, we will determine the cause and take necessary measures to prevent a recurrence,” he added.
