A Zamfara State government delegation, led by the Health Commissioner, Dr Nafisa Muhammad Maradun, visited the victims of the recent Talata Mafara explosion at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, UDUTH, in Sokoto.
The blast, believed to have been caused by gunpowder, ripped through the Talata Mafara main market, disrupting bustling commerce and particularly affecting traders.
The delegation delivered drugs and other essential medical supplies to the injured persons.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Health’s spokesman, Suleiman Isah, the Talata Mafara Local Government Chairman, Yahaya Yari, was also part of the entourage.
Maradun assured the victims that the Zamfara State government would cover all medical expenses.
“The Zamfara State Government will bear the cost of everything for the explosion victims, including drugs, food for patients and caregivers, and transportation after they are discharged,” Maradun said.
She appealed to various authorities and individuals to contribute towards the immediate treatment of the patients.
“The government has also allocated weekly food allowances for both patients and their caregivers,” she added.
Maradun offered prayers for those who lost their lives in the explosion and for the swift recovery of the injured.
She also stated that since the management of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, UDUTH, in Sokoto does not charge patients in such situations, the hospital should submit the expenses incurred since the victims were brought in so the Zamfara State government can settle them.
UDUTH’s Chief Medical Director, Professor Anas Ahmad Sabir, expressed his condolences and thanked the Zamfara State government for its support.
He confirmed that no victim has been asked to pay for treatment since their arrival.
“It is our tradition to treat patients brought to us in such calamities, and we will continue their treatment until the end,” Professor Sabir said.
The Acting Chief Medical Director, Professor Usman Sani, who represented Professor Sabir, appealed for further support from the Zamfara State governor.
“Your visit shows your concern, and we truly appreciate it.”
The explosion victims expressed their gratitude to the delegation and offered prayers for their benefactors.
