Zamfara First Lady, UNICEF Distribute 1,000 Hygiene Kits To Schoolgirls

The First Lady of Zamfara State, Hajiya Hurriya Dauda Lawal, in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), has distributed 1,000 personal hygiene kits to students of Government Girls Day Secondary School, Galadima Ala, in Gusau.

The exercise, carried out as part of activities marking the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, is aimed at supporting girls’ education and promoting their safety both offline and online.

Speaking during the distribution, Hajiya Hurriya urged the students to remain focused on their studies and conduct themselves responsibly on social media to avoid digital violence.

“You should be mindful of what you post online, as the internet never forgets. Use these kits well, care for yourselves and live confidently without fear,” she said.

The First Lady told the students that they are future leaders with the potential to shape a better society, stressing the need for a safe and supportive environment for them to thrive.

She warned that digital violence is increasingly becoming a major threat to young people. “Digital violence is real and its impact can be deeply damaging. We must stand together to safeguard ourselves and others in online spaces. Gender-Based Violence is no longer just physical; it now exists in the digital space,” she said.

Hajiya Hurriya called on stakeholders, parents, teachers and community members to expose all forms of gender-based violence and support survivors.

She reminded the students of the services available at the Hurriya Dauda Lawal Sexual Assault Referral Centre at King Fahad Women and Children Hospital, Samaru, where survivors can access medical care, legal guidance and professional counselling.

“Do not keep silent. Speak out, seek help and know that you are not alone. Everyone must work together to end GBV. Let us encourage one another to report any form of digital harassment or bullying without fear,” she said.

The First Lady reiterated the need for collective responsibility in protecting girls both online and offline, saying a safer environment would enable them to learn, grow and contribute meaningfully to the development of Zamfara State.
