Former member of the House of Representatives, Usman Bugaje, has accused ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo of working relentlessly to secure a third term in office, contrary to Obasanjo’s recent denial.
Obasanjo, over the weekend, had claimed that if he wanted a third term as president, he would have easily secured it. But reacting on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Monday, Bugaje maintained that there was overwhelming evidence of the former president’s third term bid.
“I can confirm to you that Obasanjo did everything within his power to push for a third term but failed,” Bugaje said. “All of us in the National Assembly at that time knew beyond any doubt that he worked day and night. Many of us were threatened by his agents, and some suffered different types of harm.”
He alleged that money was distributed to lawmakers to advance the agenda, insisting that those who shared and received the inducements were still alive.
Bugaje also recalled that Senator Victor Lar, then leader of the Northern Caucus in the House of Representatives, had to go into hiding to avoid harassment as lawmakers mobilised to resist the plan.
“There are so many evidences. Those who distributed the money are alive. Those who received it are alive. Those who rejected it are also alive. That is sufficient evidence,” he stressed.
