4 hours ago 28

In a bid to boost agricultural productivity and enhance food security, the Yobe State Government has organized the third phase of training for 178 agricultural extension agents across the Damaturu and Gashu’a zones. This two-day training, conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, marks a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to revitalize its agricultural sector.

Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Hon. Ali Mustapha Goniri, emphasized the importance of this training, stating that it aims to maximize agro-economic output and equip extension agents with the necessary skills to support farmers at the grassroots level. He highlighted the significant investment made by the administration of Governor Mai Mala Buni in the agricultural sector, amounting to billions of naira.

The training program is designed to refresh and enhance the capacity of extension agents, enabling them to transfer modern farming techniques to farmers across the state. Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Barrister Muhammad Inuwa Gulani, noted that extension agents play a vital role in agricultural development, and their responsibilities include disseminating information on improved inputs, seedlings, and pesticides to farmers.

The Yobe State Government has also strengthened partnerships with Morocco to enhance the supply of fertilizers and other agricultural inputs, aiming to produce high-premium agricultural produce that meets both national and international standards.

This initiative is part of the state’s broader efforts to transform its agricultural sector, which is acknowledged as the predominant economic engagement of the majority of the population.¹ With a large expanse of agricultural land, lakes, and floodplains suitable for crops, livestock, and fish production, Yobe State is poised to become a major player in Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

The government’s commitment to agricultural development is evident in its investment in modern farming techniques, extension services, and partnerships with international organizations. As Hon. Goniri aptly put it, “Modern farming requires innovative techniques to help farmers navigate challenges and achieve better yields.” With this training program, Yobe State is taking a significant step towards achieving its agricultural goals and ensuring food security for its citizens.
