Newcastle United have completed the signing of Brentford forward Yoane Wissa in a £55 million transfer, finalised on deadline day.
The deal for the DR Congo international is worth an initial £50m plus £5m in add-ons, making him one of Newcastle’s marquee signings of the summer. Wissa, who struck 19 Premier League goals last season, will wear the number nine shirt at St James’ Park.
The move follows Newcastle’s record-breaking sale of striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool for £125m, leaving Eddie Howe’s side in need of attacking reinforcements.
The 28-year-old’s transfer brings to an end a drawn-out saga. Brentford had rejected two earlier offers from Newcastle, prompting Wissa to publicly declare his desire to leave in a statement on Sunday.
Upon signing, Wissa told the club’s website, “I’m really happy to be here and to sign for one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League. I’ve got dreams, I’ve got faith, and now I will do my best to make it all happen. I can’t wait to get started.”
Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe welcomed the arrival.
“Yoane is a player whom we have admired for some time, and we’re delighted to have him on board. He brings proven Premier League quality, demonstrated not only by his goalscoring output but also by the crucial work he does for the team. Wissa joined Brentford in 2021 and scored 49 goals in 149 appearances for the Bees. His departure marks a significant loss for Thomas Frank’s side.
