Nigerian midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi has been handed a new responsibility at Turkish side Beşiktaş FC after being named the club’s vice-captain on Friday.
Wilfred Ndidi, who has impressed since joining the Istanbul club, will serve as deputy to Turkish international Orkun Kökçü, who now wears the captain’s armband.
Both players take over from long-serving skipper Necip Uysal and goalkeeper Mert Günok, who previously held the captain and vice-captain roles.
Announcing the change, Beşiktaş said in an official statement: “With the decision of our President Serdal Island and the Board of Directors, changes have been made regarding the captaincy of our Football A Team.
“Based on the recommendation of our technical team and the effectiveness of players on the field, Orkun Kökçü has been appointed as first captain and Wilfred Ndidi as second captain.”
The club also thanked Uysal and Günok for their years of leadership, adding that it looks forward to seeing Kökçü and Ndidi guide the team with the same level of commitment and professionalism.
Beşiktaş currently sit sixth in the Turkish Super Lig table with 13 points from seven matches. The new captaincy team will take charge for the first time when the Black Eagles host Gençlerbirliği S.K. later today, October 18, in their Matchday 8 encounter.
