The office of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed an online report claiming that some leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held a meeting to persuade the minister to contest the 2027 presidential election.
In a statement on Friday, Wike’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, described the report as “another lie from idle minds who have nothing to contribute to the development of the country.”
Olayinka said that contrary to the false report, Wike remains fully committed to the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and has no presidential ambition.
“As far as Wike is concerned, it is President Bola Ahmed Tinubu till 2031,” he stated.
He criticised those spreading the rumour, saying their “pull Wike down” tactics were shameful and showed a lack of serious reasoning.
“Wike does not function in hiding. He does what he says and says what he does. The Minister has made it clear that as long as the 2027 presidential election is concerned, he is with President Tinubu,” Olayinka said.
The aide explained that the only meeting held on August 20, 2025, involved PDP stakeholders from Southern Nigeria, and it was convened to discuss an upcoming meeting in Lagos aimed at micro-zoning party positions in the South.
He noted that the outcome of that meeting was publicly released in a statement signed by several PDP leaders, including State Party Chairmen of Imo, Abia, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers States, as well as other prominent members such as Hon. Chidiebere Egwu Goodluck, Hon. O. K. Chinda, Senators Mao Ohuabunwa, George Sekibo, and Mike Ama Nnachi.
Olayinka added that the names of those who attended the meeting were already made public through various media outlets, describing attempts to link the gathering to Wike’s alleged presidential bid as deliberate misinformation.
“The person and character of the FCT Minister are known to everyone — he does not do anything in hiding. He has said it clearly that from now till 2031, it is on the mandate of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu that he will stand,” he said.
Olayinka further stated that Wike’s focus remains on implementing the Renewed Hope Agenda in the FCT by driving infrastructural development and ensuring that Abuja competes with other major capital cities around the world.
