The speed of ongoing road development projects in Abuja has pleased the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, who has reaffirmed his commitment to seeing them through to completion on schedule.

He stated this during an inspection trip on Wednesday, where he assured that the May 2025 deadline remains sacrosanct, even as he commended contractors for their commitment and effectiveness.

“I must say that I am quite impressed with the speed of work by the contractors, particularly those handling road construction like Julius Berger and CGC,” Wike stated. “By the grace of God, we will meet the May 2025 completion deadline as promised.”

Emphasising accountability and progress
Wike underlined that making noticeable progress has been possible by hiring qualified firms and managing funds properly.

“When contractors see that funds are being disbursed as expected, they put in their best. This is why I insist on awarding contracts to only competent firms with the right equipment and expertise,” he explained.

The minister also toured important projects like the Judges’ Quarters in Katampe and major thoroughfares such as Obafemi Awolowo Way and Shehu Shagari Way. He thanked the community for their collaboration, which has allowed the work to continue without interruption.

“We thank the community members for their support; this is what we expect from them, and I am very happy with what I am seeing,” he remarked.

On compensation and community engagement, Wike reassured people impacted by construction projects that measures to provide compensation were well underway.

“The Resettlement Department has paid residents in Wasa and Life Camp, while payments for those in Gishiri will be completed by the end of the week,” he noted.

He lauded communities for their understanding and support, stressing that such collaboration is crucial for successful project execution.

Focus on waste management
Addressing waste management challenges, particularly in satellite towns, Wike revealed plans to overhaul the system by engaging new contractors.

“I was not impressed with the previous waste contractors, especially in satellite towns,” he said. “But we are almost done selecting new firms that can deliver. By next week, this process should be completed, and we will begin to see improvements.”

He promised to put policies in place for a cleaner city and cautioned against careless rubbish disposal. Wike reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to making Abuja a premier capital city with effective municipal services and infrastructure.

“Our focus remains on massive infrastructural development as a key driver of economic growth and improved quality of life,” he said during the tour.

The Kabusa-Takushara Access Road, Kuje arterial highways, and several bridges between area councils are among the current projects nearing completion. Abuja is expected to see major advancements in urban growth and connectivity this year.
