The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has commenced the distribution of subsidised fertiliser and farming equipment across its six area councils on Thursday, highlighting Minister Nyesom Wike’s commitment to advancing agricultural policy and rural development.
At the flag-off ceremony in Abuja, Wike, represented by his Chief of Staff, Chidi Amadi, described the initiative as a key measure to combat food insecurity, ease rising input costs for farmers, and strengthen livelihoods.
He announced that 50 metric tonnes of fertiliser would be available at 50 percent subsidised rates this farming season, warning against resale or diversion of the materials.

Mandate Secretary for Agriculture and Rural Development, Suleiman Ango, revealed that the Secretariat had procured 15,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser, 3,500 knapsack sprayers, and other inputs for certified farmers, cooperatives, and associations. “All products will be available at highly subsidised rates, with strict monitoring to prevent open-market diversion,” he said, noting alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Dr. Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, Mandate Secretary for Women Affairs, introduced the “Muje Puje” project, which integrates food security initiatives for women, youth, students, and households. She highlighted the revival of a 9,000-square-metre farm in Puje, stressing that supporting women in agriculture contributes to national development.
Traditional rulers across the FCT attended the ceremony, encouraging rural residents to embrace farming and safeguard their farmlands. Analysts note that the intervention addresses rising food inflation while consolidating Wike’s political presence in Abuja, complementing his ongoing initiatives in infrastructure, security, and agriculture.
