ABUJA: The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Bar. Nyesom Wike, has inaugurated the newly developed Karmo District Market in Abuja, hailing it as a pivotal step towards fostering economic growth and enhancing trade within the capital city.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony through his representative, the Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, Wike highlighted that the project reflects the administration’s commitment to empowering small businesses and creating a conducive environment for commerce.
“This project is a clear demonstration of our administration’s commitment to fostering economic growth, empowering small businesses, and creating a conducive environment for trade and commerce,” Wike stated.
He stressed that markets play a crucial role in community development, serving not only as centers for buying and selling but also as indicators of the local economy’s strength and resilience. According to him, the new market is expected to boost local commerce, create employment opportunities, and enhance the livelihoods of residents.
Wike affirmed that the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s economy and improving business prospects in the FCT.
The Minister also urged traders and residents to maintain the market’s facilities by ensuring cleanliness, orderliness, and mutual respect. Additionally, he called on the market leadership to collaborate with relevant authorities in addressing any challenges that may arise.
Earlier, the Group Managing Director/CEO of Abuja Investments Company Limited (AICL), Amb. Maureen Tamuno, described the project as a significant achievement under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing “economic growth through job creation.”
Tamuno highlighted that the market was developed on a 9.91-hectare land, featuring over 2,500 well-organized shop units catering to various goods and services. She noted that the market includes modern amenities such as an expansive parking space to ease traffic congestion, clean water supply, and sanitation facilities to ensure a hygienic trading environment.
Expressing appreciation, Wike commended AICL, development partners, contractors, and all stakeholders who contributed to the successful completion of the project.
