“Why Jonathan Shouldn’t Contest 2027 Election” — Shehu Sani

Former Kaduna Central Senatorial District lawmaker, Shehu Sani, has explained why former President Goodluck Jonathan should not run for the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking on Sunday Politics, a programme aired on Channels Television on Sunday, Sani said Jonathan would be wasting his time if he attempted a return to power because the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is no longer the strong political platform it once was.

“The PDP he used to know is not the PDP now. The PDP in the South-West is endorsing the president. Some members of the party are in the coalition.

“So, it is not the same party he once led, and he shouldn’t waste his time,” Sani said.

He stressed that Jonathan’s name always surfaces whenever an election approaches but cautioned him against being pressured into joining the race.

“It is always his volition to contest, but I advise him not to do that. The reason is very simple: the PDP is fragmented and cannot guarantee him the victory he once enjoyed,” he added.

Sani also noted that Jonathan’s legacy could be undermined if he attempts a comeback in a fragile political climate. “Jonathan has earned his place in history.

“Coming back now will only expose him to ridicule and unnecessary political battles,” he stated.

The former lawmaker recalled that Jonathan became president following the death of Umaru Musa Yar’Adua in 2010 and later won the 2011 election under the PDP.

However, he failed in his 2015 re-election bid, losing to the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Muhammadu Buhari.

“The political atmosphere is not in his favour. The opposition is weak, the ruling party is entrenched, and the PDP is divided. It is not wise for him to run,” Sani concluded.
