Why I refuse to live off my father, uncles’ reputation

Umar Yar’Adua, son of Senator AbdulAziz Yar’Adua and nephew of the late former President Umar Musa Yar’Adua, has urged young people to focus on building their own names and legacies rather than relying solely on family reputation.

In a video shared on social media, Umar reflected on the weight of his family name, stressing that while it carries significance, it does not automatically translate to personal achievement.

He emphasised that individuals must carve out their own paths, noting that a father’s name might open doors, but only one’s own work, values, and achievements can keep those doors open.

In his words:

“Do you know what it feels like when everybody knows your father’s name but nobody knows yours? My uncle was the late President Umar Musa Yar’Adua, my other uncle was late Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, and my dad is Senator AbdulAziz Yar’Adua.

“I grew up in a family where the name carried weight, but here is the truth — their name doesn’t automatically make me anything. If I don’t build myself, I will just be another shadow living off their reputation.

“Your father’s name may open doors, but only your work will keep you inside. Stop hiding in someone else’s shadow.”
