ABUJA – The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream), Ikenga Ugochinyere, has attributed successful passage of policies by the executive, through the House of Representatives, to the “inclusive leadership” style of the Green Chamber.

He said the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas and his Deputy, Benjamin Kalu, have demonstrated selflessness in promoting the interests of lawmakers and the nation at large.

In a statement on Thursday, Ugochinyere explained that the traits have garnered the confidence of lawmakers in both men.

The member representing Ideato North/South federal constituency of Imo State, noted that with the confidence reposed in the duo of Abbas and Kalu, lawmakers always give their support to policies of the federal government, usually via the instruments of executive bills and requests routed through them.

“The confidence of lawmakers in the leadership of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas and the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu has been responsible for the approval of many federal government policies either conveyed through executive bills or requests.

“Because both the duo of Speaker Abbas and Deputy Speaker have proved to us beyond reasonable doubt that they were selfless leaders representing the interests of not only lawmakers but the generality of Nigerians we are representing, we always support them in ensuring that federal government policies they presented see the light of the day.

“It is also on record that under the 10th House, christened the people House under the leadership of the Rt Hon. Speaker Abbas and Rt Hon. Deputy Speaker Kalu has in place the most ambitious legislative agenda with eight priority areas of strengthening good governance, improving national security, law reform, economic growth and development, social sector reform and development, inclusion and open parliament, influencing/directing Nigeria’s foreign policy, and climate change and environmental sustainability.

“Guided by these, the lawmakers in support of the Speaker and his Deputy have always give legislative backing to federal government policies as most of them are in tandem with our legislative agenda through which we also monitor how the approved policies are implemented to ensure the Nigerians are well protected.”

Notable amongst these are the Student Loans (Access to Higher Education) Act, 2024; the National Anthem Bill, 2024; Appropriation Act, 2023 amendment bill, Appropriation Bill, 2024, Appropriation Act, 2024 amendment bills, requests for reimbursement of promissory notes, amongst others while the Appropriation Bill, 2025 is under consideration.”
