The Vice Chancellor, University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi, has said the institution spent over N2 billion to complete five major projects in the varsity.

Obi said some of the projects were abandoned before she came on board.

Addressing journalists ahead of the 36th convocation ceremony of the university where about 9,000 students are to be awarded diplomas and degrees on Saturday, the VC said three pavilions and two hostels have been completed, using funds from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETfUND).

She said, “The Minister of Education, Prof Tahir Mamman, has agreed to personally commission these five projects during the week of the 36th Convocation ceremony.

“The funds are all from TETfUND. Some of these five projects were inherited from my predecessor and some were abandoned. So, we have used a total of N2 billion to complete these projects,” Obi said.

She further disclosed that a total of 438 persons would be graduating with PhDs and 754 with master’s degrees.

At the convocation, the Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Diocese, Matthew Hassan Kukah, will speak on ‘Harmonising Diversity for National Development’.
