WAEC Debunks Rumours: No Subject Restrictions for 2026 WASSCE

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has strongly refuted circulating media reports claiming that it has ordered secondary schools to restrict Senior Secondary students to specific subjects for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

In an official press release issued Tuesday, 28th October 2025, and signed by the Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, WAEC described the reports as “unfounded” and “misleading”.

The Council stated categorically:“WAEC did not issue any such directive(s) nor restrict the choice of students to offer any particular subject(s) for WASSCE (SC) 2026 as alleged.”

WAEC clarified that the development, review, and regulation of the Senior Secondary School curriculum fall exclusively under the mandate of the Federal Ministry of Education, while its own role is limited to implementing government-approved policies through examinations.

The examination body urged schools, parents, students, and the general public to completely disregard the false publications and rely only on official communications directly from WAEC for accurate information regarding the 2026 WASSCE.

The Council reassured all candidates that the 2026 examination will be conducted fairly and professionally, with no student denied the right to register for any approved subject.

The viral misinformation had caused widespread anxiety among SS3 students and parents in recent days, with many wrongly believing that WAEC had unilaterally slashed the number of subjects or imposed new compulsory combinations.
