The Nigeria Association of National Professional Footballers (NANPF) has called on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to prioritise player safety and fan experience during Nigeria’s FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
CSP Chijioke Kalu, Director of Player Safety and Security at NANPF, made the appeal on Friday in Abuja, ahead of the Super Eagles’ match against Rwanda in Uyo on Saturday.
Kalu urged the NFF to ensure that ticketing and stadium operations reflect international safety standards, especially for families, children, and persons with disabilities.
“This is the last weekend of the school holiday. Families, especially children, should be able to access the stadium in a safe and welcoming way,” he said.
To promote a safer environment, Kalu encouraged the deployment of clear signage throughout the stadium, highlighting child-friendly zones, safety rules, and designated family seating areas.
He also stressed the importance of accessibility, recommending a Progressive Web App (PWA) with real-time maps, accessible route info, emergency contacts, and support request features.
“Everyone, regardless of age or ability should be able to enjoy the beautiful game with dignity and confidence,” he said.
Kalu called for a detailed emergency preparedness plan in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, NSCDC, and emergency medical teams.
“We are working with security services to ensure that contingency measures are in place, from medical emergencies to crowd control scenarios,” he said.
He said joint simulations and pre-match security briefings were being recommended to align all personnel.
Kalu praised the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, describing it as one of the best in terms of infrastructure and crowd control.
However, he said ticketing, stadium access, and fan navigation systems must match global standards.
“We must take advantage of technology to improve ticketing, enhance security, and elevate the overall fan experience, particularly for children, women, and the elderly,” he said.
He urged the deployment of trained volunteers at key entry and exit points to assist fans and ease congestion.
“This will ensure seamless movement for all categories of fans and create a secure environment for players and spectators,” he added.
