Voter apathy mars #AnambraElection2025 governorship poll in Onitsha, Idemili 


Saturday November 8, 2025 Anambra state governorship election recorded low turnout of voters, especially in Onitsha North and South Local Government Area (LGAs). 

Blueprint.ng reports that the low turnout was attributed to the fear of attacks or death that could arise through election violence.

However, hundreds of petty traders around the streets of Onitsha were busy with their business while the elections were on.

Speaking shortly after casting his vote at the Immaculate parish ward 4,  the National Chairman of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Barr. Sylvester Ezeokenwa, said the election process has been seemless except few polling units that had been reported with the issues of BVas malfunctioning, saying that the issue was being handled by the competent hands to rectified.

Hon. Ezeokenwa said there were few cases of missing result sheets in some polling units, which was later addressed.

He commended all the APGA agents across the state for leaving up to expectations, saying that “we trained them on the basic requirements to perform their responsibility”.

The APGA National Chairman thanked INEC Officials for demonstrating capacity and commitment in ensuring smooth election process.

According to him, “APGA is hopeful with what they have put on ground. All we demand is free, fair and credible election.

When asked about the low turnout of voters, he said, “There was fear that people will not come out for this election, but Governor, Charles Soludo encouraged electorates to come to vote, over the years, Anambra has witnessed about 20% turn out in every election. If you go round, it is the same thing.

Also speaking, the Founder of the biggest Group of Soludo, Hon. Promise Egbeji, noted that he was happy that the election is peaceful.

“I have not heard record of violence or brutality anywhere in the state.

“Everybody is singing APGA because of what the governor has done,” he said.

He advised voters especially the youths to remain calm, not engage in vices at all, I believe that everything will end well.

At St. Monica Anglican Church, taskforce polling unit Woliwo, INEC Officers came to the unit without result sheets which was discovered by the APGA agent and the President General of Woliwo community, Chief Ifeanyi Onwuegbuchinam. 

Chief Onwuegbuchinam said after the discovering of the missing result sheets, voting was stopped for about three hours before the result sheets were brought to the units. 

“This polling units is having 17 polling units,” he said.

At unit 014, one of the three units located at  St. Andrews Anglican Church Central School, Obosi Ward 1 former Minister of Aviation, Chief, Osita , Chidoka (Ike Obosi) and his younger brother, Hon. Obinna who represented Idemili North South Constituency in the House of Representatives voted at about 11.30 am.

Speaking after casting their votes, Chidoka brothers said they were satisfied with the conduct of the exercise so far and urged all the electorate to come out enmasse to exercise there franchiize.

Also at Oba in Idemili South LGA, the traditional ruler, Jgwe Augustine Emelobe who spoke to newsmen at Units 011, 040 and 012 , while going round the polling units to monitor the exercise, expressed satisfaction with the ongoing exercise so far.

While Dr. Obiora Obiabumuo, the Managing Director of Bureau of Statistics and the Statisican-General of Anambra state, observed that the exercise was going on in a free and fail manner.
