US embassy, consulate in Nigeria to close Thursday for Thanksgiving

The United States embassy in Abuja and the consulate general
in Lagos will be closed on Thursday to observe the country’s Thanksgiving
holiday.

The US mission notified the public in an X post on Wednesday
afternoon.

Thanksgiving is a federal holiday in the US celebrated on
the fourth Thursday of November. It is annually held to give thanks for the
harvest and blessings of the past year.

The heart of the celebration involves families and friends
gathering to share a large meal with turkey as the centrepiece, along with
other traditional dishes.

According to the US department of agriculture, Americans
consume more than 46 million turkeys on Thanksgiving Day each year.

As a lighthearted tradition, US presidents pardon turkeys
for the holiday.

This year, Waddle and Gobble, two lucky birds won the White
House lottery. President Donald Trump issued the clemency on Tuesday.

The pardon spares the turkeys, allowing them to live out
their lives on farms rather than being eaten.

The two birds stayed at the luxurious Willard
InterContinental Hotel in Washington ahead of their pardon ceremony in the Rose
Garden.

The tradition aims to gesticulate goodwill, humour, and
mercy, reflecting the spirit of Thanksgiving.
