American-based teenage fencer Peluola Akinbamiro has committed to representing Nigeria on the international stage.
The 13-year-old, who trains at the Fort Bend Fencing Academy in Houston, cited her deep connection to Nigeria as the driving force behind her decision to reach out to the Nigerian Fencing Federation, hoping to make her international debut for the country. President of the Nigerian Fencing Federation, Adeyinka Samuel, welcomed Akinbamiro’s decision, highlighting the growing interest of foreign-based athletes in representing their homeland.
“I am thrilled with Akinbamiro’s commitment. Nigeria has the potential to compete with the best in the world, and having talented fencers like her will inspire our homegrown athletes to strive for excellence. Her inclusion in the team will undoubtedly boost the sport’s development. As she embarks on her international journey this year, we hope she will bring home medals, especially as we prepare for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games,” Samuel said.

“We are delighted that many athletes recognize their roots and want to be part of our efforts to grow fencing in Nigeria. With the African Championships this year and the Commonwealth Championships next year, Akinbamiro’s presence will be a valuable addition. Given her talent and young age, she fits perfectly into our long-term vision for the 2028 and 2032 Olympic Games,” he added.
Expressing her excitement, Akinbamiro shared how fencing has shaped her life and aspirations.
“I fell in love with fencing after watching passionate athletes compete at the World Cup and other major events. The sport has taught me patience and self-awareness. Representing Nigeria is incredibly important to me because it is my motherland, and I am proud to wear its colors on the global stage,” she said.
