Ruben Amorim has shared his initial reluctance to leave Sporting CP mid-season for his new role at Manchester United.

The Portuguese revealed he asked United if he could stay until the end of the current campaign.

However, United made it clear that it was “now or never.”

Amorim, 39, will officially join United on November 11, after fulfilling his duties at Sporting for their fixtures against Manchester City and Braga.

His recent 5-1 win with Sporting over Estrela Amadora has strengthened the club’s lead in the Primeira Liga, moving them six points clear.

After the game, Amorim explained, “I asked United if it could be at the end of the season. It was what I wanted.

“United said no. It was now or never. So I had to make a decision.”

He emphasized that United’s current struggles were part of what attracted him to the role, as it gives him the opportunity to reshape the team “his way.”

In response to rumors about money being a factor in his decision, Amorim clarified, “Some people say it’s for money. It’s not.

“Other clubs were prepared to pay 3 times more, and I refused. This is the club I wanted,” he added.
