United Nigeria Airlines Celebrates Four Years of Soaring Success

1 week ago 23

United Nigeria Airlines on February 12, 2025, commemorated the fourth anniversary of its inaugural flight, reflecting on a journey marked by resilience, growth, and a steadfast commitment to excellence in Nigeria’s aviation sector.

The Founder of United Nigeria Airlines, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, recounted the airline’s challenging inception during the global COVID-19 pandemic. Initially slated for a 2019 launch, the airline faced delays due to worldwide travel restrictions. Undeterred, the team secured final approval from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) just a day before their maiden flight on February 12, 2020.

“I recall that period vividly, a time when our nation was in the midst of its most difficult crisis,” Prof. Okonkwo reflected. “Despite these hurdles, we persevered, and thanks to the unwavering support of our partners, we received the final approval from the NCAA just a day before our maiden flight.”

Investing in People

Prof. Okonkwo expressed deep appreciation for the airline’s team, many of whom have been part of the organization since its early days. He emphasized the airline’s commitment to nurturing both experienced professionals and young talent, creating a balanced team poised to shape the future of aviation in Nigeria.

“Many of the young people in our team joined us with little more than a backpack and their training certificates. Today, I see them building families, receiving wedding invitations, and growing in their careers,” he remarked.

“The transformation is heartwarming, and it reminds me that the essence of our work is not only about providing air transport but about making a meaningful impact in the lives of those around us.”

Navigating Challenges and Celebrating Milestones

“Since its inception, United Nigeria Airlines has navigated a highly competitive aviation sector, striving to maintain high standards of service and safety. Despite operating in challenging economic times, the airline has demonstrated remarkable growth, expanding its services and becoming a key player in Nigeria’s aviation industry.

“In 2024, the airline achieved significant milestones, including the renewal of its International Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) certification, a global benchmark for safety in aviation. The airline also expanded its network by adding new destinations such as Benin, Kano, and Sokoto, and increased its fleet with the introduction of additional aircraft to cater to rising demand.”

Gratitude to Stakeholders

Prof. Okonkwo extended gratitude to the Nigerian government, particularly the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, for implementing policies that have benefited domestic airlines, such as positive changes to the foreign exchange policy. He also acknowledged the pivotal role the media has played in the airline’s journey, thanking journalists for their consistent support and for keeping the public informed about developments within the airline industry.

Looking Ahead

As United Nigeria Airlines celebrates four years of operations, the airline remains committed to delivering quality service, expanding its routes, and continuing to invest in its people. “This is just the beginning. There is still much work to do, but together, we will keep soaring to new heights,” Prof. Okonkwo concluded.
