The United Nation Children Fund (UNICEF) in conjunction with the Adamawa state government, through the Ministry of Education and Human Development, have commenced training of 1,780 primary and secondary school teachers on social, emotional learning.
In an interview with journalists in Yola, Wednesday, a UNICEF lead consultant who is an associate professor of education from University of Maiduguri, Dr. Myfriend Bulus, said the North-east geo political zone has its share of insurgency and other conflicts and many people are traumatised.
He said many are also stressed up and facing challenges of hunger, starvation and poverty caused by both human and natural disasters, hence the need for the training.
He stated further that such training will equip and give the teachers the capacity to be able to speak up to reality on ground because the teachers themselves are traumatised and the parents are traumatised.
Since all, including learners are traumatised, it was UNICEF decided to bring experts in this area to build the capacity of master- trainers who would go and interact with the teachers who deal directly with the learners and impact knowledge on them so they can also inculcate it on the learners.
UNCDEF education specialist, Joel isiah Jutum, said what they want to achieve with the training is to initiate discussions around social emotional learning, because learning in Nigeria, especially in public schools, have revolved around literacy and numeracy with teachers spending all their time and energies on teaching children how to read and write.
He said there are certain skills they also want the children to learn for them to live in peace through conflict resolution.
He added that they needed to adapt to situations they found themselves by not over reacting to situations.
