UN Seeks $6 Billion To Address Worsening Humanitarian Crisis In Sudan

6 days ago 22

The United Nations has launched a $6 billion appeal for Sudan, calling for urgent international assistance to address one of the world’s most devastating crises. The funds aim to combat mass displacement, growing famine, and widespread violence, as the 22-month war between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continues to escalate.

This appeal marks a 40% increase from last year’s funding request, coming at a time when global aid budgets are under significant strain. The recent pause in US funding has further complicated humanitarian efforts, affecting life-saving programs worldwide.

“Sudan is a humanitarian emergency of shocking proportions,” said UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher. “Famine is taking hold. An epidemic of sexual violence rages. Children are being killed and injured. The suffering is appalling.”

The crisis has already displaced a fifth of Sudan’s population and left nearly half facing severe hunger. Famine conditions have been reported in at least five locations, including displacement camps in Darfur, where continued fighting and the collapse of basic services threaten to make conditions even worse. One such camp was attacked last week as the RSF seeks to strengthen its control over the region.

While some aid organisations have secured waivers from the US government to continue operations in Sudan, uncertainty remains over the extent of famine relief coverage. The UN’s humanitarian response plan aims to assist nearly 21 million people within Sudan, making it the largest aid initiative for 2025, with $4.2 billion allocated for in-country relief and the remaining funds designated for those displaced by the conflict.

As conditions deteriorate, the UN is urging swift global action to prevent further loss of life and alleviate the suffering of millions caught in the conflict.
