The UK government has introduced stringent restrictions on overseas recruitment, barring more than 100 occupations from hiring foreign workers as part of a broader strategy to reduce net migration and prioritize British employees.
The Home Office announced the policy shift via a statement on X on Saturday, August 30, emphasizing a restructured visa system focused on local talent.
“Cutting net migration means getting the fundamentals right. Over 100 occupations are no longer eligible for overseas recruitment – opening up more jobs for British workers. A fairer, skills-focused system is now taking shape,” the Home Office stated.
The reform, enacted under Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s Labour government, which assumed power on July 5, 2024, following a decisive election victory over Rishi Sunak’s Conservatives, aims to bolster domestic employment.
However, critics warn that the restrictions could exacerbate labour shortages in critical sectors like health and social care, which have historically depended on international workers.
The Home Office has not yet released the complete list of affected occupations, leaving businesses and workers awaiting further details.
The move has sparked debate, with supporters praising the focus on British workers and detractors highlighting potential economic disruptions in industries reliant on global talent.
