In a statement, the Uganda Police Force said the original figure was an overestimate, as some victims were found unconscious at the scene and mistakenly presumed dead.
President Yoweri Museveni, who was campaigning nearby ahead of January’s general elections, offered condolences to the victims and their families.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident and have urged drivers to exercise caution on the country’s roads.
