Uganda agrees to accept US-rejected migrants despite heavy refugee burden

Uganda has bowed down to pressure from the United States (US) and agreed to take in migrants who have been denied the right to remain in America.

A senior foreign ministry official confirmed the deal on Thursday.

According to the official, the arrangement will see Uganda receive individuals classified as ineligible to stay in the US.

While specific details of the deal, including the number of migrants expected and the terms of their stay, were not disclosed, the ministry assured that the country is prepared to manage the resettlement process.

“The agreement is in respect of Third Country Nationals who may not be granted asylum in the United States, but are reluctant to or may have concerns about returning to their countries of origin,” Uganda’s foreign affairs permanent secretary, Vincent Bagiire, said partly in a statement on X, stressing that it was a “temporary arrangement.”

Uganda is already recognized globally for hosting one of the largest refugee populations in Africa, with more than a million displaced persons, mainly from neighboring South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
