U.S Probes Foreign Aid To Nigeria Amid Boko Haram Funding Claims

United States government has announced a review of how previous foreign aid allocated to Nigeria and other nations has been spent.

This decision follows President Donald Trump’s directive on January 20, 2025, to halt all foreign aid for 90 days. He cited concerns that such assistance may be contributing to global instability and failing to align with American interests.

The move comes amid heightened scrutiny of the U.S Agency for International Development (USAID) health funds. U.S Congressman Scott Perry recently alleged that USAID had inadvertently supported terrorist groups, including Boko Haram.

Perry, a Republican from Pennsylvania, made these claims during the inaugural session of the Subcommittee on Delivering on Government Efficiency last Thursday.

Boko Haram, also known as Jamā’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da’wah wa’l-Jihād, has been responsible for widespread violence in Nigeria and neighboring regions, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths over the past 15 years.

In response to Perry’s accusations, the U.S Mission to Nigeria emphasized on X that strict monitoring systems are in place to track past US assistance and ensure funds are used appropriately.

“The United States condemns the violence and blatant disregard for human life perpetrated by Boko Haram and other terrorist groups in Nigeria and the region,” the statement read.

Reaffirming its commitment to global counterterrorism efforts, the U.S government highlighted that Boko Haram was officially designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization on November 14, 2013. This designation aims to restrict the group’s financial resources, fundraising, and movement.

Washington has pledged continued collaboration with Nigeria and regional allies to enhance counterterrorism efforts and ensure that foreign aid reaches its intended beneficiaries.
