Turkey arrests Super Lig players over betting, match-fixing scandals

A Turkish court has ordered the arrest of 20 suspects, including Super Lig footballers, as part of an expanding probe into illicit gambling and match-fixing, the Turkish state news agency Anadolu reported on Tuesday.

Among those remanded in custody are Galatasaray defender Metehan Baltacı, Fenerbahçe midfielder Mert Hakan Yandaş, and Konyaspor’s Senegalese winger Alassane Ndao. Former Adana Demirspor president Murat Sancak is also being held, according to the report.

The arrests follow last week’s sweeping police operation, which detained 39 individuals, including club officials and intermediaries, over allegations of illicit gambling and manipulating match results.

Anadolu reported that prosecutors accuse Fenerbahçe’s Yandaş of placing bets on his own team’s matches through a third party.

Baltacı, meanwhile, reportedly admitted to betting during his youth career but denied wagering on any games after being promoted to Galatasaray’s first-team squad.

The scandal has sent shockwaves through Turkish football, deepening concerns over the integrity of the country’s professional leagues. Just last month, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) suspended 149 referees over similar betting and match-fixing allegations.

The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities expected to announce further developments in the coming days.
