Trump’s Threat: Lamido Asks Tinubu To Seek Help

A former Governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has described as ominous, the threat by US President Donald Trump to launch military attacks in Nigeria over alleged genocide.

The campaign of Christian persecution against Nigeria had gained traction after the country publicly condemned the killings in Gaza and supported two-state solution to the Middle East crisis.

Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September, Shettima had said the situation in Gaza was “heart-wrenching” and demanded an immediate ceasefire that will birth Palestinians independence and a home of their own on territories already recognised by the UN and international law.

From random posts by American commentators, the situation reached its height on Friday, when President Donald Trump redesignated Nigeria as a ‘Country of Particular Concern’.

The US government under Trump had first designated Nigeria a country of particular concern in 2020.

Responding to Trump’s latest action, President Bola Tinubu had rejected the allegation, saying religious persecution has no place in Nigeria.

Also weighing into the conversation, Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, had warned against framing of the security crisis in Nigeria as a genocide targeting Christians.

But unconvinced, Trump, however, threatened to launch attacks in Nigeria and wipe out terrorists he claimed are killing Christians in the country.

He also directed the Department of War to prepare for possible action in Nigeria, adding that the US might cut off all aid and assistance to Nigeria.

Adding his voice to the discussion, Sule Lamido, in a post on his social media handle, advised President Tinubu to engage all past leaders in a meeting to discuss and find solutions to the US threat to Nigeria.

He noted that it was time for all Nigerians to unite around the country’s sovereignty in order to avert what he described as a “looming danger”.

He wrote, “The threat of war on Nigeria from President Trump of the United States of America under whatever guise is very ominous! The consequences of such action can not be imagined!

“It is now time for all Nigerians of all creed to unite around our SOVEREIGNTY.

“President Tinubu on his part must swallow his pride and invite ALL our past leaders for close door meeting to fully discuss and find a way around this dangerous development. The leaders MUST on their part ignore whatever are their personal differences with President Tinubu and come to terms on how to avert this looming danger.

“Our former Presidents and Heads of State are more than eminently positioned to engage the USA and President Trump in an all out QUIET DIPLOMACY outside Media realm to resolve whatever is the US concern. For now, Nigeria does not have the luxury of time.”
