Trump’s agenda faces major hurdle as US House votes on budget resolution

3 hours ago 15

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, faces a major fiscal hurdle as the US House, led by Speaker Mike Johnson, struggles to rally Republicans to vote on the budget resolution.

Tuesday’s budget resolution vote marks the first test for Speaker Johnson in securing support for Trump’s agenda, which is expected to include $2 trillion in overall spending cuts and $4.5 trillion in tax reductions.

Indications from the US House suggest that a number of Republican members have expressed opposition to the resolution. Meanwhile, Democrats are also prepared to challenge Trump’s agenda.

“We’re planning to take up our budget resolution as early as today,” Johnson said at a news conference following a GOP meeting.

“There may be a vote tonight; there may not be,” he later added.

He continued: “There’s always more work to do right up to the end for a big vote like this, and this is a big one. We’re very, very close.”

Earlier, Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform, eulogising the “one big, beautiful bill” that “implements my FULL America First Agenda, EVERYTHING, not just parts of it!” while urging both chambers to pass the resolution.

It is worth noting that the Senate passed its own spending plan last week, which omits tax policy, leaving it to be addressed at a later date.
