Good morning Nigeria. Welcome to the Naija News roundup of top newspaper headlines in Nigeria for today, Tuesday, 7th October, 2025

President Bola Tinubu has summoned a strategic meeting involving the Council of State and the Police Council.

This development was made known in a statement released on Monday by the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.

The statement, signed by the Director of Information and Public Relations of the SGF office, Segun Imohiosen, said the meeting, scheduled for Thursday, aims to discuss matters of national importance and key issues affecting national security and policing.

The statement conveyed the President’s request for members to participate either physically or virtually.

It added that the high-level meeting underscores President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to addressing pressing national issues and ensuring the safety and security of citizens.

The Vice President of Nigeria, Senator Kashim Shettima, has called for greater restraint in handling the faceoff between Dangote Refinery and oil workers under the aegis of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).

He asserted that Dangote Refinery is a national asset that must be protected.

Speaking on Monday in Abuja at the Nigerian Economic Summit (NES31), Shettima minced no words when he declared that Aliko Dangote is more than an individual; he’s an institution.

The Vice President of Nigeria added that Nigeria is greater than PENGASSAN, and labour unions must not be allowed to hold the entire country to ransom.

Speaking further, Shettima said the way the dispute between Dangote and PENGASSAN is managed would send a clear message to investors not only in the country’s oil sector, but across all sectors of the economy.

Speaking on the theme, “The Reform Imperative: Building a Prosperous and Inclusive Nigeria by 2030,” the Vice President called for the protection of Dangote Refinery from economic sabotage.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has adjusted the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly known as petrol, at its retail outlets in Abuja.

According to Daily Post, a survey showed that filling stations in Wuse Zone 6 and Zone 4 increased their pump price from N890 to ₦905 per litre, representing a ₦15 or 1.7 per cent upward adjustment.

President of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Abubakar Maigandi, attributed the increase to supply disruptions linked to the recent standoff between the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria and the Dangote Refinery.

PENGASSAN had last week embarked on a two-day strike in protest against the mass sacking of Nigerian workers by the Dangote Refinery. The industrial action disrupted gas and fuel supplies nationwide.

Following federal government intervention, the union suspended the strike after Dangote Group agreed to redeploy the affected workers.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered an immediate review of the 2026 Hajj fares, directing the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) to produce new, reduced rates within two days.

Naija News reports that the Vice-President, Kashim Shettima, conveyed the directive on Monday during a meeting with NAHCON’s management and board members at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Speaking after the meeting, Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Ibrahim Hadeija, said the move was aimed at easing the financial burden on intending pilgrims.

He said, “Rates have continued to improve steadily, with the naira appreciating based on the effects of the economic reforms of the government. The Vice President felt that if pilgrims paid ₦8.5 million to ₦8.6 million based on negative exchange rate last year, and the exchange rate has improved, then the changes should reflect in the current fares.”

According to him, the presidency expects a “very significant reduction” in the cost of Hajj once the review is completed.

Secretary of NAHCON, Mustapha Mohammad, described the directive as a welcome development that would allow more Muslims to participate in this year’s pilgrimage.

The National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rauf Aregbesola, has called for greater transparency in the activities of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Speaking on Monday in Abuja during a panel discussion on the title: “Innovation in electoral technology 2015-2025,” Aregbesola submitted that Nigeria must change the process of choosing who becomes INEC Chairman.

He observed that, as things stand, there is too much power in the hands of a single individual in managing the affairs of INEC as well as the outcome of elections in the country, and this has to change.

The former Governor of Osun State also disclosed that he has benefited from what he described as election Shenanigans, but called for a change in the process so as to guarantee free and fair elections in Nigeria.

Speaking further, the former Minister for Interior urged INEC to be transparent and clear about the technology it intends to use for elections.

He stated that there is too much hidden from public eyes in the deployment and consistency of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BIVAS), adding that the law requires INEC to publicly demonstrate the technology it intends to use during elections.

The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has formally declared spiritual independence from the Church of England following the appointment of Bishop Sarah Mullally as the new Archbishop of Canterbury.

Naija News reports that the Nigerian Church said Mullally’s elevation as the first female to occupy the position, coupled with her support for same-sex marriage, signals a “moral decline” within the leadership of the Anglican Communion.

In a statement signed by its Primate, the Most Rev’d Henry C. Ndukuba, the church described the October 3 announcement as “devastating” and “insensitive.”

The Church recalled Mullally’s remarks in 2023 after the Church of England approved blessings for same-sex couples, where she called the outcome “a moment of hope.”

The Nigerian Church warned that her stance further deepens divisions across the global Anglican family.

Declaring that the global Anglican world could no longer look to Canterbury for leadership, the Church of Nigeria reaffirmed its allegiance to the Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON).

Nollywood actress, Regina Daniels, has defended the winner of Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) ‘Level Up’ edition, Ijeoma Otabor, better known as Phyna, following a video of them hanging out together.

Naija News reports that Regina took to her Instagram page to share a video of herself dancing with Phyna and other people.

Regina’s post comes a few hours after another video of Phyna at a club circulated online.

Commenting on Regina’s post, an Instagram user criticised Phyna’s actions and visit to the club.

The Instagram user wrote, “See person wey dey mourn her sister and asked @dangotegroup to pay $80m. On Friday, she was in club vibing.”

Responding to the post, the billionaire’s wife revealed that the reality star cries in her private moments.

Controversial singer, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has called on the Federal Government to ban prank videos after a commotion involving him at the Port Harcourt International Airport on Sunday.

A viral 53-second clip showed the artiste in beige attire attempting to confront an unidentified individual while security personnel and bystanders tried to restrain him.

In the footage, uniformed guards struggled to pull Portable toward a waiting vehicle in the parking lot as chaotic pushing and shoving ensued. At least one person appeared barefoot, while another wielded what looked like a belt or whip as the crowd watched.

Reacting in a video posted on his Instagram page on Monday, Portable claimed he was ambushed by “death pranksters”, a term he used for people staging extreme, life-threatening pranks for online content.

He insisted the incident damaged his reputation and described himself as a victim of fake publicity stunts.

Portable appealed to authorities to outlaw prank content and crack down on bloggers spreading false stories.

UEFA has approved requests from LaLiga and Serie A to stage two domestic league fixtures overseas, but the European football body insists the move is exceptional and will not set a precedent.

The ruling means Villarreal’s league game against Barcelona will be played in Miami, while AC Milan’s clash with newly promoted Como is scheduled for Perth, Australia. Both matches are expected to attract huge international attention, yet UEFA has made it clear that its support comes with strong reservations.

In a statement released after consultations with leagues, clubs, fans and players, UEFA said the majority of stakeholders remain opposed to the idea of moving national league games abroad.

UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin reinforced the organisation’s position, warning that staging games outside their home environment risks alienating the very people who give football its identity.

Coach Tunde Sanni has responded to his dismissal from Kwara United with words that reflected calm resignation rather than protest.

Speaking with Naija News shortly after the news of his sack was confirmed, Tunde Sanni chose not to defend himself or explain his side of the story. Instead, he said, “Anything they say is final. You can confirm from them.”

When pressed further, the former Kwara United boss maintained the same stance. “I give you permission, anything they said is final. Don’t bother about my own side,” he said. His remarks summed up the quiet way he has chosen to step away, a decision that comes at a turbulent moment for the Ilorin-based club.

Naija News reports that Kwara United’s management announced Sanni’s dismissal on Sunday evening, just hours after the team fell to a 1-0 home defeat against Abia Warriors in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

The result followed their elimination from the CAF Confederation Cup at the hands of Ghanaian side Asante Kotoko on a 5-3 aggregate, a double setback that left the board with little confidence in the technical direction of the team.
