Tinubu’s Strategy As 2027 Approaches Is To Subvert Nigeria’s Democracy, Compromise Peoples’ Will At All Cost

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused President Bola Tinubu of weakening Nigeria’s democracy, pointing to recent political developments as evidence of efforts to undermine opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a post on his X account, Atiku welcomed the reopening of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s office, which had previously been sealed, but stressed that the closure had deprived the people of Kogi Central of proper representation.

He compared the incident to the political tension in Rivers State, where Governor Siminalayi Fubara and several members of the state House of Assembly were suspended, describing the action as unconstitutional.

Atiku further alleged that the Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress (APC) is leveraging state institutions to intimidate opposition figures. He cited reports of harassment in Kaduna and Katsina states, including an incident at an African Democratic Congress event where former Kaduna Governor Nasir el-Rufai was reportedly attacked.

According to Atiku, these actions reflect a broader strategy aimed at silencing dissent and restricting democratic participation. He warned that if such developments continue unchecked, they could erode the democratic gains achieved since Nigeria returned to civilian rule in 1999.

“They are deliberate markers of the Tinubu administration’s strategy as 2027 approaches: to subvert our hard-earned democracy and compromise the will of the people at any costwa,” Atiku said.

The 2023 presidential election, which Tinubu won, was contested by Atiku of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party candidate Peter Obi, who raised concerns about alleged irregularities. Although the courts upheld Tinubu’s victory, both Atiku and Obi have hinted at the possibility of forming a coalition to challenge the APC in 2027.

Atiku reaffirmed his commitment to protecting Nigeria’s democracy through lawful means, urging citizens to resist what he described as a shift toward authoritarian rule.

“Let it be clear: on our part, we shall do everything legitimate and within the bounds of the law to protect our democracy, defend the sovereignty of the people’s mandate, and rescue our nation from the grip of authoritarianism,” he stated.
