President Bola Tinubu has declared that Nigeria’s participation at the ongoing 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Yokohama, Japan, is driven by a bold agenda to secure over $1 billion in trade and investment opportunities.

Speaking via his verified X handle, @officialABAT, on Wednesday, President Tinubu stressed that Nigeria’s presence at TICAD9 is purposeful and proactive. He wrote, “At #TICAD9, themed ‘Co-create innovative solutions with Africa,’ Nigeria comes with clarity of purpose. Our participation aims to unlock $1 billion+ in trade & investment, drive green innovation & industrial growth, expand opportunities for our youth, and position Nigeria as the heart and gateway to West Africa’s vast market.”

The President further explained that Nigeria’s engagement at the conference is not just about economic gains but also about fostering sustainable development. He described TICAD9 as “a platform for lasting development and global partnership, anchored on technology, talent, and trust.” He added firmly, “Nigeria will lead, and Africa will rise,” underscoring the nation’s commitment to spearheading the continent’s progress.

Highlighting the government’s priorities, President Tinubu said, “We seek to accelerate green innovation and industrial growth. This is crucial for Nigeria’s future, not only to diversify our economy but to create jobs and secure a sustainable future for our young population.” On youth empowerment, he said, “Expanding opportunities for our youth remains at the centre of our mission because they are Africa’s greatest asset and the backbone of our future prosperity.”

The conference, jointly organised by the Japanese government along with international development partners, brings together African leaders, global investors, and multilateral institutions to forge sustainable economic growth solutions for the continent.

President Tinubu’s attendance marks his first official visit to Japan since he assumed office in May 2023. His presence at TICAD9 signals Nigeria’s strong intent to deepen economic relations with Japan. He highlighted Nigeria’s ambitions: “We are positioning Nigeria as a welcoming destination for business, investment, and collaboration. Our goal is to be the hub and gateway to West Africa’s expansive market.”

By articulating these objectives, President Tinubu is reinforcing Nigeria’s role as a continental leader with a clear and defined mission to boost trade, attract investment, and champion innovation. As he summarised, “Nigeria is not just participating—Nigeria is leading. Together with our partners, we will co-create innovative solutions that unlock Africa’s full potential.”
