Tinubu, Meloni, King Abdullah II Unite in Rome to Tackle Global Terrorism at Aqaba Summit

Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and King Abdullah II of Jordan convened today at the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome for the Aqaba Process Heads of State and Government-Level Meeting.

The summit, a cornerstone of global counter-terrorism efforts, focused on addressing the escalating security challenges in West Africa, particularly in the Sahel and Gulf of Guinea regions.

The Aqaba Process, initiated by King Abdullah II in 2015 and co-chaired by Jordan and Italy, brought together world leaders to strategize on combating terrorism and violent extremism.

This year’s meeting centred on the urgency of collective action in response to rising cross-border threats, including insurgency and illicit trafficking.

President Tinubu, representing Nigeria’s pivotal role in West African security, emphasized his administration’s commitment to fostering regional stability through partnerships with Italy and Jordan.

“Security is a shared responsibility,” Tinubu declared during the summit. “Nigeria stands ready to collaborate with Italy, Jordan, and other nations to ensure peace, economic growth, and sustainable development across our regions.”

He praised Italy’s leadership in hosting the summit and Jordan’s long-standing efforts in promoting global dialogue on counter-terrorism.

Prime Minister Meloni highlighted the importance of addressing root causes of instability, such as poverty and irregular migration, while strengthening trade and energy ties.

King Abdullah II stressed the need for coordinated intelligence-sharing and capacity-building to counter extremist ideologies, particularly in vulnerable regions like the Sahel.

The leaders also held bilateral discussions on the sidelines, exploring avenues for enhanced cooperation in trade, energy transitions, and humanitarian initiatives.

Tinubu’s visit, which began on October 12, included technical sessions with regional experts and plans for further engagements with other summit attendees.

The Rome meeting marks a significant step in Nigeria’s growing diplomatic ties with Italy and Jordan, reinforcing a united front against global terrorism.
