President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has launched RenewHER, a Presidential Women’s Health Transformation Initiative, aimed at safeguarding maternal health and advancing the welfare of women across Nigeria.
According to a State House press release on Friday, signed by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Communications (Office of the Vice President), the programme was flagged off at a gala and awards ceremony held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Thursday night.
Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, President Tinubu described RenewHER as “the national engine of collaboration among all stakeholders in our campaign for a healthier Nigeria,” stressing that women’s health remains fundamental to the country’s development.
“There is no greater test of a nation’s character than the care it extends to its women. Maternal health is the heartbeat of every family, the compass of social stability, and the truest index of national welfare,” the President said.
The initiative will establish a Presidential focal office on women’s health to work with the Federal Ministry of Health, the State-Wide Approach Coordination Office (SWAp), the Ministry of Women Affairs, and the Governors’ Spouses Forum to ensure women’s health priorities are integrated nationwide.
Tinubu also announced the creation of an AI-powered National Women’s Health Digital Hub that will drive geo-targeted campaigns on maternal survival, adolescent health, preventive care, and workforce strengthening. He said the hub would connect women and families with trusted health information while linking healthcare to entrepreneurship and national prosperity.
“Maternal mortality is a shame against which we must all rally. We owe every girl-child not just the eloquent promise of a better tomorrow, but the certainty of a healthier one,” the President declared.
First Lady of Kwara State and Chairperson of the Nigeria Governors Spouses’ Forum, Prof. Olufolake AbdulRazaq, expressed the forum’s commitment to supporting RenewHER in all states. She emphasised that women’s health and empowerment are central to sustainable development, assuring that state governments, the private sector, and other stakeholders will partner in achieving RenewHER’s objectives.
Senior Special Assistant to the President on Women’s Health, Dr. Adanna Steinacker, praised Tinubu’s vision in prioritising women’s health, while UN Women Country Representative in Nigeria, Ms. Beatrice Eyong, hailed RenewHER as “a bold initiative” and “a turning point” that positions women’s health as a driver of socio-economic growth.
Other dignitaries at the event included the Chief of Staff to the President, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, governors’ spouses, diplomats, and development partners.
