President Bola Tinubu has approved N16.7 billion for the immediate reconstruction of the Mokwa Bridge in Niger State, which was severely damaged by flooding in May 2025.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, during a press briefing in Abuja on Saturday.
The Mokwa Bridge, a critical infrastructure link on the Ilorin-Jebba-Mokwa Road, connects Nigeria’s northern and southern regions, facilitating the movement of goods and people.
The flooding, triggered by heavy rainfall, rendered the bridge impassable, disrupting transportation and commerce.
Umahi emphasized the urgency of the project, stating, “The President is committed to restoring this vital artery to ensure seamless connectivity and economic activity.”
The allocated funds will cover the reconstruction of the bridge, reinforcement of its structural integrity, and measures to prevent future flood damage.
The Ministry of Works has assured Nigerians that the project will be executed by reputable contractors under strict timelines to restore normalcy to the route.
Umahi also noted that the Federal Government is working with the Niger State government to address other flood-affected areas and improve disaster resilience.
The reconstruction is expected to commence within weeks, with completion targeted before the 2026 rainy season.
Motorists and commuters have welcomed the development, expressing relief after months of detours and delays.
