Tinubu Approves ₦70 Billion Solar Power Project for Tertiary Institutions

President Bola Tinubu has greenlit a ₦70 billion mini-grid solar power project under the 2025 Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) intervention cycle to address unreliable electricity in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

The initiative, targeting 12 institutions including Nigerian Army University, Biu; Northwest University, Kano; Ambrose Alli University, Edo State; Alvan Ikoku University of Education, Imo State; and Lagos State University, aims to deliver sustainable energy to enhance teaching, learning, and research.

Aminu Bello Masari, Chairman of TETFund’s Board of Trustees, announced the project at the 2025 TETFund National Town Hall Meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, describing it as a key component of reforms under Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Masari praised the President and the Ministers of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa and Prof. Suwaiba Said Ahmad, for their support, alongside the National Assembly’s TETFund Committees.

Masari outlined the Board’s reform agenda, focusing on transforming tertiary education into a hub for innovation, enhancing transparency, and promoting research and entrepreneurship.

The solar project is one of several initiatives to improve educational quality and energy sustainability.

TETFund has also sponsored 3,332 Master’s and 4,796 Ph.D. scholars, built infrastructure like lecture theatres and ICT centres, and established Centres of Excellence in 48 institutions, focusing on biotechnology, renewable energy, and health sciences.

Additionally, TETFund launched a Special High Impact Intervention, equipping 18 medical colleges with simulation facilities in universities like Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and University of Lagos to enhance medical training and reduce reliance on foreign education.

Early Grade Resource Centres and commercial agricultural projects in Colleges of Education further support teacher training and food security.

TETFund Executive Secretary, Arc. Sonny Echono, hailed the solar initiative as a strategic move to bolster digital learning and innovation through stable, eco-friendly energy.

Senate Committee Chairman, Senator Muntari Dandutse, House Committee Chairperson, Mariam Onuoha, and other stakeholders, including Senator George Akume and Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, lauded TETFund’s transformative impact on Nigeria’s education sector through infrastructure, research, and human capital development.
