Tinubu Approves ₦16.7bn For Immediate Reconstruction Of Mokwa Bridge In Niger


President Bola Tinubu has approved ₦16.7 billion for the immediate reconstruction of the Mokwa Bridge in Niger State.

The bridge which was destroyed during the devastating floods that hit the area in May 2025, causing significant damage to infrastructure and displacing thousands of residents.

The floods claimed over 150 lives and displaced thousands of residents in the Mokwa Local Government Area.

The approval was announced by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, on Saturday, during a meeting in Abakaliki with the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi.

Idris, who is leading a federal delegation on a three-day tour of projects in the South-East, said the funding demonstrates the government’s responsiveness to urgent infrastructure needs.

“We want to thank Mr. President, and we want to thank the Minister of Works. We jointly discussed this and approached Mr. President, who graciously approved it.

“It means a lot to the people. It’s ₦16.7 billion to reconstruct the bridge a 10-span bridge,” Idris said in a statement by his Special Assistant (Media), Rabiu Ibrahim.

Senator Umahi described President Tinubu as “a compassionate and listening leader who was committed to solving the challenges confronting the citizens.”

He added, “The President approved the immediate reconstruction of the bridge as requested by the minister. He graciously approved because of him.”

The former Ebonyi governor also noted that approvals for infrastructure projects spanned the country, including bridges in Wukari, Taraba State; Lokoja; Afikpo; Keffi; Jebba; Edo; and Kebbi States.

The Niger State government reported that 1,354 people were directly affected, with 4,534 displaced and 265 buildings destroyed or severely damaged. Five major bridges collapsed, including the vital Goodwill Bridge along Mokwa-Jaba Road.
