Tinubu Applauds Lagos As Africa Hosts First E1 Electric Powerboat Race

President Bola Tinubu has celebrated Lagos for making history as the first African city to host the E1 Electric Powerboat Championship, describing the event as a landmark moment for clean energy and marine innovation.

In a goodwill message shared on Friday through Lagos State Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, Tinubu commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the organisers for bringing the global championship to Nigeria.

“This championship is not merely a thrilling spectacle on water but a statement of intent,” Tinubu said. “The E1 Powerboat series combines world-class entertainment with clean energy innovation, showcasing electric-power vessels that point the way to a greener and more sustainable future.”

The President linked the event to his administration’s broader vision for the blue economy, highlighting the government’s commitment to renewable energy, marine tourism, and coastal infrastructure.

According to him, such investments would open job opportunities, empower young people, and position Nigeria more prominently on the global stage.

Calling himself a proud Lagosian, Tinubu praised the state as the perfect host. “Lagos, the cultural capital of Nigeria, the heartbeat of our economy, and a symbol of our resilience, is the perfect host. Its vibrant waterways and dynamic people embody the spirit of competition, creativity and hospitality,” he added.

The opening ceremony at the Lagos Boat Club in Ikoyi featured a regatta led by Sanwo-Olu and shakedown runs by the participating teams. The governor noted that hosting the E1 Lagos GP was not only about sports but also a chance to showcase Lagos’ dynamism and commitment to sustainability.

“E1 Lagos GP is more than a race; it is a celebration of Lagos’ dynamism. The Spirit of Lagos,” Sanwo-Olu said.
