Three LASUSTECH Students Killed As Tipper Loses Control

A tragic road accident on Saturday claimed the lives of three students of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) and left seven others injured at Powerline Junction, inward Ikorodu Roundabout, Lagos.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the fatal crash in a statement by its spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, who said the accident occurred after a sand-laden tipper truck suffered a brake failure and rammed into multiple vehicles along the busy route.

According to Taofiq, the out-of-control truck collided with a Toyota Corolla, an MPV bus, and four tricycles, killing two male and one female LASUSTECH students on the spot.

“It was a deeply distressing scene that threw the Ikorodu community into mourning,” he said, adding that seven others, including tricycle riders, sustained severe injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment.

He further revealed that preliminary investigations pointed to mechanical failure and excessive speed as the main causes of the crash. The remains of the deceased students were reportedly deposited at the Ikorodu General Hospital mortuary.

LASTMA officials, assisted by other first responders, later cleared the wreckage to restore traffic flow along the corridor.

Reacting to the tragedy, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the incident as avoidable, blaming it on reckless driving, overspeeding, and poor vehicle maintenance—particularly faulty braking systems.

Bakare-Oki extended condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured, reiterating the agency’s commitment to promoting safer roads across Lagos.
