The Deputy National Youth Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Timothy Osadolor, has suggested that Nigerians owe former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, an apology for denying him a third term ambition.
Naija News learnt that Osadolor made the remarks on Monday in Abuja, contrasting Obasanjo’s record in office with what he described as the shortcomings of successive governments.
According to Osadolor, Nigeria made a costly mistake, stressing that the country’s institutions and governance might have been stronger under Obasanjo’s leadership.
He said, “With the benefit of hindsight, and given the performance of governments that followed, I think Nigeria should apologise to President Obasanjo for denying him a third term.
“Perhaps a third term under him would have stabilised and strengthened our national institutions. We would have had fewer strongmen and stronger institutions.”
Meanwhile, political activist and civil society leader, Usman Bugaje, has faulted Obasanjo’s denial of seeking a third term in office, insisting that the ex-leader “did everything within his power” to extend his stay.
Obasanjo, speaking at a democracy dialogue organised by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation in Ghana last week, dismissed the long-standing controversy.
“I’m not a fool. If I wanted a third term, I know how to go about it. And there is no Nigerian dead or alive that would say I called him and told him I wanted a third term,” Obasanjo had said.
But appearing on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Monday, Bugaje, who served in the National Assembly during Obasanjo’s administration, maintained that legislators at the time had first-hand knowledge of the former president’s ambition.
