Textile Union Condemns NUPENG’s Attack on Oshiomhole

The National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN) has strongly criticized the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) for its recent verbal attack on former Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, calling it “unnecessary and unwarranted.”

In a briefing led by NUTGTWN President Peters Godonu and General Secretary Ali Baba, the union expressed dismay over NUPENG’s remarks, which stemmed from Oshiomhole’s intervention in the ongoing dispute between Dangote Refinery and PENGASSAN.

The textile union defended Oshiomhole’s comments as patriotic, aimed at fostering industrial peace, boosting national productivity, and safeguarding workers’ rights through dialogue and mutual respect.

Highlighting Oshiomhole’s legacy as a former NLC President, ex-Governor of Edo State, and current Senator, NUTGTWN described him as one of Nigeria’s most respected labour icons with the moral authority to address workers’ and economic issues.

“It is unacceptable for any affiliate union to resort to personal attacks on a leader whose decades of selfless service to the Nigerian working class remain exemplary,” the union stated, urging NUPENG to exercise restraint and uphold the labour movement’s values of solidarity and consultation.

NUTGTWN warned that public disputes and insults among unions undermine the collective strength of organized labour and distract from addressing workers’ challenges amid Nigeria’s economic hardship.

In a show of support, the union announced plans to rename its National Secretariat in Kaduna after Oshiomhole, recognizing his enduring contributions to the labour movement and workers’ rights.

The textile union called on the broader labour community to unite, maintain discipline, and focus on defending Nigerian workers’ interests through constructive engagement.
